Our Methods - Developed Plate Construction
This method is not "new", it has been around as long as sheet materials have been used for

boats. However, accurate computer- generated shapes lead to much wider use of the method.

Many builders in aluminium still use a "traditional" method of building. This runs something like this:

-loft the hull from the lines drawing and offsets table.
-build the frames and jig them in position, plumb, square and level.
-add longitudinals and fair everything up.
-cut the plating by lofting, templating or marking on the job.
-weld up.
{For round bottom craft, this is still the required procedure. }
For chine boats of suitable design, the developed plate process is much simpler:
-copy all templated shapes and fit-up marks to your plate stock.
-cut out the shapes. .
-assemble and tack-up skin plates for basic shape.
-insert your pre-cut frames and stringers on their marks.
-weld up.
Since all the shapes have been lofted by the computer, the builder needs only these skills:
-copy shapes to the alloy sheet.
-cut on the marks.
-fit on the marks.
-weld up.
The same process applies to all boats designed for this method. It is exactly the same as kit
construction, except the builder does the cutting.
- lofting is eliminated.
-square, plumb and level are not required.
-the construction is self-jigging.
-hull plates are pre-cut on the floor.
For the builder, the advantages are:
-a quality job with lower skill levels.
-superb fit-up for better welding and a fairer finish.
-faster construction time.
-a saving in material, since all parts are cut at the start.
-confidence in costing; the process is the same for all the boats.
As many builders have discovered, this process gives them full benefit of CAD / CAM without being
limited to the small range of available kits and paying premium prices. And of course a custom job
need hold no fears.
This building method is also known as "plate first" construction, "frameless construction"
(a bad name, of course there are frames!), "pulling up" a boat and probably other names. If it is new
to you, a BUILDER'S MANUAL can be downloaded for more information by clicking "MANUAL"
